Am I a Good Candidate for Liposuction?

How is Liposuction Performed?
Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty or lipo, begins with a special tool called a cannula that is inserted into tiny incisions on the target body sites. This narrow tube gently suctions out excess fat. Dr. Sutkin will then smooth out the skin, trim away any excess and stitch the incisions.
Several liposuction methods can be used during body-contouring surgery. The “super wet technique” injects fluid into the fat-extraction sites -- approximately the same amount of fluid as the amount of fat to be suctioned. Dr. Sutkin also offers tumescent liposuction at his Los Gatos facility. This method uses even more fluid for the fat extraction -- up to triple the amount. Another technique is ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty, or UAL, during which a special cannula is inserted to liquefy the fat before it is suctioned.
In most cases, liposuction will be an outpatient surgery. Dr. Sutkin will discuss the appropriate technique with you during your lipo consultation in Los Gatos.
What Can I Expect After Liposuction?
Following your lipoplasty in Los Gatos, elastic bandages are used to keep the skin immobile and to reduce swelling. For more involved liposuction surgery, patients will be closely watched for any complications. Stitches are usually removed within one week, and most patients will return to the workplace after a few days.
Complications with ultrasonic liposuction or tumescent liposuction surgery are rare, but may include fluid loss, a reaction to anesthesia, blood clotting and infection. Other, milder risks may include pigmentation changes and numbness of the skin.
