Statistics

Cosmetic surgery procedures have increased 37 percent since 2000, according to new figures released from the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (ASPRS). Over 10.2 million cosmetic surgery procedures were performed in the United States in 2005. These statistics represent only procedures performed by ASPS Member Surgeons certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

Liposuction, at 324,000 procedures, is once again the most commonly performed cosmetic procedure in the United States. Nose reshaping is the second most common procedure at 298,000, followed by breast augmentation, 291,000; eyelid surgery, 231,000; and tummy tuck, 135, 000.

Facelifts did not make the list of the top five surgical procedures for the first time in six years. However, it is still a highly sought-after procedure, with almost 109, 000 performed last year. Dr. Bruce Cunningham, president of ASPS, attributes the slight decrease in facelifts to the increased availability and quality of minimally-invasive wrinkle fillers.

Nearly 8.5 million of these minimally-invasive procedures were performed in 2005, up 13 percent from 2004. For the fourth year in a row, the same minimally-invasive procedures ranked in the top five: BOTOX® Cosmetic, 3.8 million; chemical peel, 1 million; microdermabrasion, 838,000; laser hair removal, 783,000; and sclerotherapy, 590,000.

Reconstructive surgery is performed on abnormal structures of the body, caused by congenital defects, developmental abnormalities, trauma, infection, tumors, or disease. The top five reconstructive procedures were tumor removal, at 3.9 million; laceration repair, at 344,000; scar revision, at 181,000; hand surgery, at 172,000; and breast reduction, at 114,000.

Additional information on 2005 statistics can be found in the National Clearinghouse of Plastic Surgery Statistics on the ASPRS web site at www.plasticsurgery.org. By choosing an ASPRS member plastic surgeon, patients are ensured that the physician has graduated from an accredited medical school and completed at least five years of additional residency, usually three years of general surgery and two years of plastic surgery. To be certified by ABPS, a physician must also practice plastic surgery for two years and pass comprehensive written and oral examinations. You may access the ASPRS web site at www.plasticsurgery.org, to find a plastic surgeon in your area.
