Gynecomastia (excess breast tissue in men) is a very common condition, and male breast reduction is a very common procedure—in the San Jose area, in California, and all over the country. Male breast reduction removes excess fat and tissue from the chest, creating a more streamlined and masculine physique. Nearly half of all men suffer from some degree of gynecomastia.
Male breast reduction at our San Jose area office is performed through an incision or using liposuction, or both. If an incision is made, it is typically placed under the arm. Excess fat and tissue is extracted from the chest area, and the incision is closed. If the male breast reduction procedure is being implemented primarily to remove excess fat, the surgeon may opt to use liposuction. With liposuction, a cannula is inserted; this instrument breaks down and removes the excess fat, and the incisions are then stitched. Most male breast reduction procedures are performed on an outpatient basis; the surgery usually lasts between one and two hours.

After male breast reduction surgery, an elastic bandage will be worn over the chest. Sometimes a drain is inserted in order to drain excess fluids. Stitches will be removed within one to two weeks, and patients may return to work at the end of the two weeks. The elastic bandage should stay on for approximately one month.
Complications from male breast reduction are rare but may include bleeding, an anesthesia reaction, fluid loss/gain, numbness, and infection. Patients will experience some swelling and bruising, but this will lessen and disappear over the course of three or four weeks. Rarer side effects may include changes in skin pigmentation, minor scarring, and minute breast asymmetry. Smokers should stop smoking two weeks before and two weeks after male breast reduction.
