For many of us, the signs of aging first appear in the eyes, in the form of bagginess and puffiness. When it comes to quality eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, in the San Jose and Palo Alto areas, Dr. Sutkin is the man to trust. Eyelid surgery is a procedure which reshapes the upper eyelid or lower eyelid by the removal or repositioning of excess tissue as well as by reinforcement of surrounding muscles and tendons. The blepharoplasty procedure is used to improve the appearance of sagging upper eyelids and puffy lower “bags.” When upper eyelid changes are severe, eyelid surgery may sometimes be performed to open up the field of vision obstructed by overhanging skin.
Blepharoplasty is performed at our San Jose and Palo Alto area office through external incisions made along the natural skin lines of the eyelids. The underlying tissue is separated from the skin and any excess fat, muscle, or skin is removed. Depending upon the scope of your blepharoplasty, the operation takes one to three hours to complete. After your eyelid surgery at our San Jose and Palo Alto area facility is complete, the initial swelling takes one to two weeks to fade, and several months are needed until the final result becomes stable.

For patients with less pronounced bags under the eyes, your surgeon may suggest transconjunctival blepharoplasty. In this form of eyelid surgery, the surgeon removes pockets of fat, but no skin. This procedure leaves no visible scar.

After eyelid surgery, the eyelids are treated with a light ointment and bandaged. Medication will alleviate any discomfort you may feel, including tightness and soreness of the eyes, and applying a cold compress will minimize swelling and bruising. The head should be kept elevated for several days following eyelid surgery. Within a week after your blepharoplasty, you will return to our San Jose and Palo Alto facility to have the sutures removed. Though care must be taken to protect the eyes from contact or irritants, most patients find they can return to work in seven to 10 days. To maximize the success of your eyelid surgery and to minimize the risk of complication, Dr. Sutkin will give you specific instructions for surgical preparation and postoperative care.
