Feeling good about your facial appearance is important. Unfortunately, the process of aging, as well as acne, surgery, and accidents, can change your skin's appearance. Dermabrasion or dermaplaning, at our practice near San Jose can improve the appearance of skin by re-texturing the problem areas. Following this procedure, you may expect a smoother skin surface.
Dermabrasion involves resurfacing the top layer of the dermis (skin) through the use of a spinning, wheel-like instrument. The dermabrasion process polishes the skin down to an undamaged level, free of acne, scars, sun damage, and wrinkles. Dermaplaning is a slightly less intense procedure during which the doctor uses a "dermatome" to polish the skin. Both dermabrasion and dermaplaning are outpatient procedures and may last between 15 minutes to an hour or more, relative to the amount of skin damage and the surface area that is being treated.
Following dermabrasion surgery at our San Jose area practice, the treated skin will be slightly swollen and may appear as a mild burn. The face generally returns to its normal color in several weeks. You may experience a burning or throbbing sensation after dermabrasion, although medication can alleviate much of this discomfort. Ointment is applied to soothe the face and to help minimize the amount of scabbing you experience. Sun and other irritants (strenuous activity, wind, and contact) should be avoided for several months after dermabrasion. Patients can expect to return to work in two weeks.

As with any cosmetic surgery, dermabrasion complications are rare, but include infection and scarring. Should infection occur after dermabrasion (indicated by a sallow or yellowish tinged crusting around the scab), immediately consult your doctor. Other concerns include permanent alterations in the skin's pigment, turning either darker or lighter in tone. When only one section of skin is treated by dermabrasion, the face may appear slightly spotty. If you smoke, Dr. Sutkin will recommend that you quit both two weeks prior to and following your dermabrasion surgery at the Cosmetic Institute near San Jose.
