If you are experiencing pain or medical problems due to uncomfortable breasts, you should consider breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, with Dr. Howard Sutkin. When your breasts cause you back and neck pain, difficulty breathing, skin irritation, or skeletal deformities, breast reduction can give you the relief you need to live a full life. In addition to alleviating medical problems, breast reduction helps women who feel self conscious about the size of their breasts. To learn more about breast reduction surgery, contact the Cosmetic Institute today – serving San Jose, Palo Alto, Los Gatos, and beyond.
When you opt to have breast reduction surgery performed at our San Jose, Palo Alto area practice, the surgeon will typically make an anchor-shaped incision around the dark area of the nipple (areola) that continues downward and along the crease underneath the breast. The surgeon will remove excess glandular tissue, fat, and skin, and adjust the nipple, still attached to the nerves and blood supply, to its new higher position. The skin from each side is then pulled down and around the areola, effectively reshaping the breast. After confirming that the proper shape and symmetry have been achieved, Dr. Sutkin carefully stitches up the incision, avoiding excess scarring. In certain cases, the vertical part of the scar can be eliminated. Stitches are usually removed in one to three week's time. Our breast reduction procedures are generally performed in a Palo Alto or San Jose area hospital, usually requiring a two to three day stay. The procedure itself takes between two and four hours and is done under a general anesthetic.
Once the breast reduction surgery is complete, your breasts will be wrapped with an elastic bandage or surgical bra to keep you comfortable and supported. You can remove the bandage within a few days while the surgical bra stays on until the bruising and swelling subsides, typically a few weeks. To prevent excessive fluids from causing undue swelling, a small tube may be placed in each breast to allow drainage. Any pain patients may experience in the days following their breast reduction will be minor, and will subside in seven to 10 days. Commonly our Palo Alto and San Jose patients find they can return to work after two weeks.
Complications in breast reduction surgeries are rare, and generally diminish over time. Some effects you might experience are bleeding, infection, a reaction to the anesthesia, or small sores around the nipple, which typically occur immediately following surgery. Some women temporarily lose sensation in their nipples after breast reduction surgery, a condition that almost always fades over time. Patients may also experience some discomfort in the breast area for up to a year. Occasionally, the surgery removes milk ducts leading to the nipples, impairing a woman's breast-feeding ability. To maximize the success of your breast reduction surgery and to minimize the risk of complication, Dr. Sutkin will give you specific instructions for surgical preparation and postoperative care.
