What is Dermabrasion?
Feeling good about your facial appearance is important. Unfortunately, the process of aging, as well as acne, surgery and accidents, can change your skin’s appearance. Dermabrasion or dermaplaning at The Cosmetic Institute in Los Gatos can improve the look of your skin by re-texturing the problem areas. Following this procedure, our patients experience a smoother skin surface.
Dr. Howard S. Sutkin and his skilled staff offer dermabrasion as a skin resurfacing option for men and women in Los Gatos and further afield. We frequently work with residents of San Jose, Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, Saratoga, Sunnyvale and Campbell, as well as other nearby locales. Please contact us today and schedule your initial dermabrasion consultation.
Am I a Good Candidate for Dermabrasion?
This procedure is typically reserved for more stubborn skin imperfections. You may be a good candidate for dermabrasion in Los Gatos if you have:
- Dark pigmentation
- Chicken pox scars
- Acne scars
- Sun-damaged skin
- Wrinkles
- Pre-cancerous lesions
How is Dermabrasion Performed?
Our dermabrasion in Los Gatos involves resurfacing the top layer of the dermis (skin) through the use of a spinning, wheel-like instrument. The process polishes the skin down to an unmarred level, free of acne, scars, sun damage and wrinkles. Dermaplaning is a slightly less intense procedure during which Dr. Sutkin uses a “dermatome” to polish the skin. Both dermabrasion and dermaplaning are outpatient procedures and may last between 15 minutes to an hour or more, relative to the amount of skin damage and the surface area that is being treated.
What Can I Expect After Dermabrasion?
Following dermabrasion at our Los Gatos facility, the treated skin will be slightly swollen and may appear as a mild burn. Your face generally returns to its normal color in several weeks. You may experience a burning or throbbing sensation after dermabrasion, although medication can alleviate much of this discomfort. Ointment is applied to soothe the face and to help minimize the amount of scabbing. Sun and other irritants (strenuous activity, wind and contact) should be avoided for several months after dermabrasion. Patients can expect to return to work in two weeks.
Dermabrasion complications are rare, but include infection and scarring. Other concerns include permanent alterations in the skin’s pigment, turning either darker or lighter in tone. When only one section of skin is treated by dermabrasion, the face may appear slightly spotty. If you smoke, Dr. Sutkin will recommend that you quit both two weeks prior to and following your dermabrasion at The Cosmetic Institute.
Dr. Sutkin and his caring team of professionals are pleased to provide dermabrasion to patients throughout the region, including Los Gatos, San Jose, Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, Saratoga, Sunnyvale and Campbell. We are committed to giving you the best treatment with outstanding results.
